Speke Resort and Conference Centre, Lake Victoria, Kampala, Uganda
Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake by surface area and was named after Queen Victoria by the explorer John Hanning Speke, the first Briton to document it. Speke accomplished this in 1858, while on an expedition with Richard Francis Burton to locate the source of the Nile River. Lake Victoria is the world’s second-largest lake by surface area after Lake Superior in North America and is the world’s largest tropical lake.
The Speke Resort and Conference Centre is in the neighbourhood of Munyonyo in the southeastern part of Kampala along the northern shores of Lake Victoria. Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda.
The hotel is one of five 4-star hotels in Kampala, as rated by the Uganda Tourism Board in June 2015. The resort lies adjacent to the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort. This location is approximately 13 kilometers by road, southeast of Kampala’s central business district. The resort was commissioned in 2007 in time to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2007.
